College of Professional and Continuing Education | Brand New Classroom Building

Cal State University, Long Beach

Project Value

$30 million

Start Date

April 2017

Completed Date

February 2019

Delivery Method

Collaborative Design Build

The 3 story, 34,000 SF building has established a new home for College of Professional and International Education (CPIE), with 20 classrooms and a conferencing center.  In keeping with the existing campus mid-century architectural language of flat planes and clean lines, use of brick and emphasis on open space and natural light, the building is a modern interpretation of these classic recognizable CSULB elements.

Designed to achieve LEED Platinum and net-zero energy, (a first in the California State University system) CPIE has set a campus benchmark for sustainability, supporting the goal of reaching campus-wide carbon neutrality by 2030.  The building has also created a hub for international students to learn, collaborate, and integrate into the broader campus community.

The open landscape design surrounding the building was engineered to divert runoff into vegetated bioswales. Composed of grass, rocks and vegetation, the bioswales move and filter water towards the groundwater system and the campus storm drain network while also adding aesthetic value to the campus by encouraging new wildlife with the addition of the increased plant diversity, including native California plants.
